The Roman triumph : the dangers of winning a war [videorecording] / [lecture by] Mary Beard ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

Lecturer Mary Beard, professor of classics at the University of Cambridge and author of The Roman triumph, examines triumphal processions and explores questions that remain relevant today about the nature of military success. Triumphal processions followed Rome's greatest victories and bloodiest massacres. These were lavish ceremonies during which kings, soldiers, gold, silver, bullion, artworks, and other spoils of war were paraded through the streets of the capital. Beard explains that the triumph also had a darker side, and a victorious general risked humiliation as well as glory.
